ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif has given a green signal for the amendment in Prevention of Electronic Crimes act 2016, as per the sources. The new law will not only make social media more responsible but also to protect the digital rights of ordinary citizens.

The DRPA will ensure the enforcement of PECA Bill 2016 on social media and it will work under the Ministry of IT. The DRPA can investigate any violation in social media platforms in this regard The DRPA officers will use their power to interrogate someone If a person was called in for an interrogation and he/she didn’t appear so In that case, the agency have powers to arrest him/her from anywhere in Pakistan.

This step comes after the recent establishment of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority, which has been made a separate body for investigating cybercrime offenses. The agency will have a Director General and other officials will work as a team to counter cyber threats.

The recent amendments in PECA and the formation of new regulatory authorities shows that the government wants to have more control over online spaces. However, as soon as the details of these amendments will be revealed and discussed in Parliament, we can expect some concerns about freedom of expression and online privacy.
