Supreme Court Takes Notice of Faisal Vawda’s Press Conference
Supreme Court of Pakistan takes suo moto notice of the press conference of former Federal Minister Faisal Vawda. Court summoned Vawda and Mustafa Kamal to appear.
The Chief Justice said the court would consider the press conference as potential contempt of court. And wants to hear what Vawda and Kamal had to say in their statements.
The court has also issued a notice to Vawda to come in person and explain his statements. He has a time period of two weeks to respond to the court’s notice.
The Chief Justice has also inquired from the additional attorney general, his opinion on the matter. The attorney general said that he had only seen parts of the press conference so cannot give a full assessment.
The court also touched the topic of freedom of speech acknowledging citizens to speak their mind, however, the Chief Justice made it clear that the right to freedom of speech does not cover contempt of court.
The Supreme Court move indicates how important it is to respect the judicial proceedings and maintain decorum when discussing any matter in public. The court will proceed with the case and make a decision based on evidence.
