Wheat Import Scandal Sparks Controversy in Pakistan

The Federal Minister for Interior, Mohsin Naqvi, has claimed that some people are insisting to investigate him and the former caretaker AnwaarulHaq Kakar in the recent wheat import scandal. It should be mentioned here that while the public outrage is increasing more by every passing day and fingers are being pointed towards the involved individuals regarding their involvement in corruption.

Inquiry Committee Formed to Investigate Wheat Import

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate possible anomalies in the massive wheat import. Despite the “bumper crop” report and surplus stocks, the import left Balochistan and Punjab governments unable to buy wheat from local farmers. As a result, wheat prices have gone below their official rates.

Blame Game Ensues

Although the inquiry committee first dismissed summoning Naqvi and Kakar, in the import decision, the former caretaker prime minister has put forward his views and blame was shifted to the then interim provincial government. While talking to a private news channel, Kakar maintained that he has no role in the crisis as per 18th amendment it is on the shoulder of provincial governments not prime ministers overseeing wheat production.

Federal vs. Provincial Responsibilities

During the press conference, Kakar emphasized the decentralized responsibility for wheat procurement, and demanded a constructive dialogue over the crisis. He said that the federal government has already taken steps to solve the matter

Naqvi Alleges Targeted Inquiry

Federal Minister Mohsin Naqvi also said that some people are trying to force the inquiry to be initiated only on him and Kakar.
