Lahore High Court Rules Marrying Wife’s Sister Before Id’dat Completion as Illegal

Lahore High Court has declared the marriage of wife’s sister before the completion of Iddat as an illegal act. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh issued an 11-page detailed verdict on this matter.

Id’dat and its Significance

Iddat is a kind of waiting period, especially for a woman after the death of her husband or after divorce. This period gives them emotional relief as well as in case of pregnancy ensures clarity of paternity.

Court’s Ruling and Islamic Principles

The judge used the Islamic principle that “a man cannot marry two real sisters at the same time” to make his decision. He said that if a person marries the sister of his wife before Id’dat completion then its equivalent to keep both sisters by as wives.
